Welcome to H2

Here at H2 we are very excited to be hosting an external competition. This Thursday (29th), we have a 3-way match against two local clubs:

Bishop's Stortford and Hoddesdon.

Organising and hosting an external competition for the first time since we were locked-down is a significant milestone for our club. And another small step to the "new normal", whatever that will be.

We will be welcoming Frank Blyth (CPAGB BPE1*), who is our judge for the evening, and will be commencing at 7.45pm.

We look forward to seeing members from all clubs. Indeed, we would be delighted to see you all to join in the (competitive) fun.

The Dragon In Monochrome

Last week we were privileged to have a presentation of "The Dragon in Monochrome" with Margaret Salisbury FRPS MFIAP FIPF FSITTP FSINWP AWPF APAGB.

It was a fun evening and I found myself giggling a lot during the talk. Margaret is a committed ‘print worker’ as in her words, ‘print is the final act in the performance’ that is photography, and as a result she is sponsored by Fotospeed. Within her landscape images, she showed her favoured ‘triangle’ composition and also showed the ‘S curve’ which leads the viewer into the picture, giving it depth apparently this is known as ‘Hogarth’s line of beauty’!

The second half featured her stunning portraits and wildlife images. With portraits she reminded us of the importance of getting to know your subject, and in so doing, giving a more natural response to the camera, as well as the background which can make all the difference to the impact of your subject.

The animal images really showed a different side to familiar creatures render as stunning mono images showing the texture and hairs on creatures you miss in colour.

It was a fun and interesting evening, taking us on Margaret’s outstanding photographic journey with humour and tips that were useful to all.

Affinity Photo Workshop - Lesson 2

Last Monday, it was great to see so many members taking part in lesson 1 of H2's in-house workshop on Affinity Photo, learning the basics.

These lessons are designed to last no longer than an hour, and over the following few weeks will build on these basics. The big advantage with them being live on Zoom is that members can ask questions as they learn.

Lesson 2 is on this coming Monday (26th) and any H2 member is welcome to join these lessons.

Summer's On The Horizon

As we mentioned last week we are planning practical sessions during the long, sunny & warm Thursday evenings in July & August.

Our plans are obviously subject to Government restrictions still trundling down their "one-way road out of lockdown", but we are hoping that we will be able to meet in person by then.

At last Thursday's meeting we took a straw-poll of members' ideas. These included visiting amateur sporting events, the Lee Valley White Water Centre, Gibberd Garden in Harlow and churches at both Greensted and Blackmore.

So, H2 members, do please continue to let us know your ideas for practical evenings and what you would like to do and learn this Summer.

Do Remember...

As we (safely) get out and about more, do remember that our local Parish Magazine is always keen to see our images to feature on their front page.

Images should be taken locally to Much Hadham, preferably in portrait format and in colour. Other than that the subject matter is open.

So, get out there, peeps, and exercise your shutter finger. Your images can be uploaded to our H2 Flickr page or emailed directly to Paul (Major) here.
