Joris has been a photographer for four years. A short while compared to many of our members. But his macro images of insects demonstrated much maturity.

After a brief introduction, he explained the macro lenses he uses. And how he works to gain the correct exposure.

He then continued with outlining the way he lights his subjects, much preferring flash (including strobe) over ambient.

His workflow management was fascinating: he selects the images he wishes to keep in-camera by "locking" those shots and then deleting all the other images on his card...very brave!

And he also has an unusual way of manipulation, uploading the RAW images to his smart phone and then using its Lightroom app. to complete any manipulation.

If focus stacking is required, then he does use his laptop and the "Zerene" focus stacking software.

Towards the end of his presentation he gave his hints & tips for macros photography - some rather original:

• 
  get down low - get into their world
• 
  be prepared to get wet and dirty
• 
  use a stick to put an insect on, so you can move it for easier shooting
• 
  go out in the early morning before they have warmed up because they will stay still longer
• 
  don’t shoot in direct sunlight - it ruins the shot!
• 
  try going out after rain so you get water droplets on the insects
• 
  be comfortable - get a camera capture clip (he recommended Peak Design)
• and last but definitely not least, respect the insects and keep them wild and free.
