The H2 Newsletter

We had an interesting "What's in the bag" evening last night, and probably not quite what we were expecting. It started with Jeff and the kit he uses for landscapes and the type of filters and holder that he uses and also the merits of the peak design strap system which started a lively discussion.

Next was Alan with a very different set of equipment, one that he uses in his job for the Ambulance service. Starting with the camera he uses to record situations and then the body armour and protective clothing that he has to wear to do it. Also some of the first aid kit he uses for things like packing bullet wounds and dealing with missing limbs!

After tea Mark talked us through a shoot that he is planning to do with the 'Rom Boys' to promote a film about a legendary skate park in Hornchurch. So we not only got some of the history of the place and the people but also the thought processes that go into the image he wants to achieve and the equipment he would need to do it. He then went through his camera bag, and who knew that one person would need quite so many torches! A very enjoyable and enlightening evening.

You can view a video about the Rom Boys here.

Next Week

Mark is promising us a really special portrait session next week with “Things You Didn’t Even Know You Needed To Know About Portrait Photography”

We have three experienced models using separate set-ups to show:

  • The use of just one light for dramatic portraits
  • A creative way to use a background to add drama to your portrait images
  • The differences between male and female lighting
  • The importance of styling
  • How small differences in camera angle can have a dramatic effect on the final image
  • How to use feathering and create a wrap-around lighting
  • How to avoid the curse of the amateur photographer “The Swamp Look” when they use artificial lighting

Second part will be the opportunity for members to take photographs themselves. We will have three lighting set-ups and three models which will create a variety of looks.
Bring a camera and tripod.

UPCOMING EXTERNAL COMPETITIONS

We have three dates for you to put in your diaries. They are external competitions that our club is entering.

The first is St Ives Interprint Competition held on Saturday 22 February 2020 at the Free Church Centre, Market Hill, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 5AL. The day consists of firstly, of an exhibition of all entered images which can be viewed between 10am to 4.30pm. After that, between 6pm and 9.30pm the images are judged (this year by Monica Weller FRPS) and presentation to the winners.

The second is the East Anglian Federation of Photographic Societies (EAF for short, thankfully) Inter-club PDI and print competitions. They are both held at the Fulbourn Centre, 31 Home End, Fulbourn, Cambridgeshire, CB21 5BS.
The PDI competition is being held on Sunday 9 February 2020 between 10.30am and 4pm
And the print competition is on Sunday 8 March 2020, again between 10.30am to 4pm.

By competing in these events, H2PS will be up against the best club photography within our region; it is challenging, yes, but important to inspire us to keep our standards high, develop and improve. And useful, motivating and enjoyable to view the images that other clubs are producing. Pop these dates in your diary and come along and support your club.
