Welcome to H2
A warm welcome to members and friends of H2
This Thursday we have our portrait competition. It's not been an easy year for portraits with most of it spent in Lockdown but I hope you all have something creative to show us. This year's external judge is Sarah Kelman.
We encourage all members to enter up to 4 images (see below) as it is a chance to receive feedback, suggestions and critique. Email them to dpi@h2photo.org.uk with the word Portrait as the email subject. Please send them to us by 11pm Tuesday (2 March) at the latest.
How to prepare your images can be found on our website. Go to Members Area > Competition Rules > Submission Guidelines
(If we receive more images than our judge can have time to give a worthwhile critique, we will remove one of the images from each submission of four. Please let us know which one of your four images you are willing to have pulled, by putting a "4" at the end of the title eg:

Last Thursday - Dave Garthwaite
It was a full and comprehensive tutorial given to our club by Dave Garthwaite last Thursday. The bulk of his presentation was showing us the work-flow he uses to produce his fine-art architectural images.
Working mostly in mono, he clearly explained how he prepares his images; the ways he selects elements of his images; and then the final process of dodging and burning.
He also explained a process that is now in vogue: luminescence masks. These can give images the smooth transition of tone and texture often seen, and is probably a tutorial subject in itself.
He recommended looking at two proponents of this genre: Greg Benz (& "Lumenzia" software) and Julia Anna Gospodarou (websites given below).
Dave certainly knows his way around Photoshop in order to create his very stylised pictures, and endorsed that having a clear focus brings results. Thank you, Dave.

This Month's Theme...continues
Our theme for this month, Guess What This Is?, is off to a splendid start with several images uploaded to our H2 Flickr page already.
The subject can be anything - totally open to our imaginations. We can use obscure angle of view, or a subject out of context taken in such a way that the subject is not instantly recognisable.
The theme is devised to stretch our creative grey cells; get thinking how we can make our images different.
Please put your images up on our H2 Flickr page entitled "Guess What This Is 1; 2; 3", etc. And then we will have a club evening to see who has managed to "hide" their subject well enough to get past members' beady eyes.
(And do take an "ordinary" image of the subject, too. It will be good fun to see the differences members have achieved)

Peter Warne - Wildlife of Copped Hall
Friend of the club, and excellent speaker, Peter Warne is giving a talk on behalf of the Copped Hall Trust. The talk concerns the wildlife of Copped Hall and the surrounding area with the bulk of the images taken in 2020.
He will be using the webinar facilities by EFDC and their licence allows 100 participants so there should be plenty of room. We are asking for £5 from each computer seat all of which will go to the restoration fund which like so many good causes needs some swelling after last year.
The talk will be at 7pm on 10th March and last for about an hour. Tickets can be secured on-line through “ticketsource” on our website www.coppedhalltrust.org.uk .
