H2 Photographic Society
The H2 Newsletter

Last night was a great evening and was really in keeping with the spirit of H2.  Mark created a really special portrait session.  Using Andrew Wallace and his daughter Rebbeca he used three different lighting setups to show lots of different aspects of portrait photography.

Using a cam-ranger he could display the images as he took them on the big screen and everyone could see clearly the effect of the changes in lighting which made for a very interesting session.

Then everyone got a chance to play with the lighting and different set-ups as Alan, Chris and Graham added to the available models.  A huge thanks to Mark, our models and Paul for transporting the mountains of gear involved.

But that wasn't the only thing happening, out in the hallway Paul had a session setup teaching how to mount pictures for competitions.

With 3 potential new members turning up, lots of conversations and learning going on, this was an evening that truly met our vision for what we wanted to do with H2.

Next Week

It will be a chance for us to look at some of the best photography in the country and discuss whether we think it's the best, what makes it good and how we can do better.

WANT TO IMPROVE YOUR IMAGES?

One way to motivate us to develop and better our photography is to enter the distinction examinations of one of this country's photographic bodies. Both the Royal Photographic Society (RPS) & Photographic Alliance of Great Britain (PAGB) - there are others - run these courses.
And just the entering encourages us out of our comfort zone; to develop new skills, to try different image genres and give us different experiences.
Successful completion does give us a qualification, yes, but more important is the journey we travel whilst creating the images, finding ourselves in a different place, with new skills; perhaps even enjoying our photography more.

And a reminder that the St Ives Interprint Competition is being held on Saturday 22 February 2020 at the Free Church Centre, Market Hill, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 5AL, with, firstly, an exhibition of all the entered prints between 10am to 4.30pm. And after that, between 6pm and 9.30pm, the images are judged (this year by Monica Weller FRPS).

Places to Spend your money

I had a couple of conversations last night about suppliers so I thought I would share the links here.

 - Essential Photo is A great place for lighting equipment and kits to get you started in the studio. If you are confused by all the options they are happy to provide advice.  You will often hear American photographers talking about Godox gear, the equivalent in the UK is called PixaPro and supplied by Essential Photo.

Keep an eye out for their discount codes or sign up to their mailing lists for further reductions.

 - Cotswold Mounts provide ready cut mountboard (and backing board) in the 50cm x 40cm size needed for competition. You can even buy the mounts with the aperture already cut if you don't have a mount cutter.

Best of the Best

Over on Flickr Mark has started a discussion of great photography, it has started with Joel Grimes:

Joel has a distinctive style combing HDR backgrounds and studio work.  Do you like his work? do you "get it"? or does it leave you cold?   Why not pop over to the discussion thread and make your thoughts known.
