The H2 Newsletter
Thanks to Paul & Mark
Welcome to this week's H2 Newsletter and huge thanks to Paul (Radden) & Mark (Edwards) for an informative evening on Thursday.
Paul gave an illuminating & entertaining presentation on his way of lighting a single model. Once the 'studio' was set up and explained, we were all encouraged to join in.
This is the great benefit of practical evenings because it drives us to think about the fundamentals of using our cameras: as Paul said to me when I had my turn, "The lighting is set to 125th second at f/10 at 200 ASA." Immediately, I had to think about setting my camera onto manual mode (unusual for me) and then remembering which dials and buttons to use to set the shutter speed and the aperture. And when it was recommended that the scene should be shot in 'daylight' colour temperature, I had to dig deep into my memory on just how to change the colour temperature on my camera from its usual 'auto' setting.
I noticed that some members' cameras did not synchronise with the wireless flash sensor straight away, but this hiccup was soon sorted; again probably helping those members to learn a bit more about their cameras.
Grateful thanks to our model for the evening, Shirley (Radden).
At the other end of the room, Mark had invited three members of the Much Hadham table-tennis club as models. His 'studio' was set up over the table-tennis table; he obviously had envisaged a particular image and it was helpful to see how he adjusted the lighting set-up to 'craft' his pre-imagined image. It reminded me how useful it can be sometimes to have a clear idea for an image, before even picking up the camera, and can lead to more pleasing and creative images. After all, improving our images, is our club's raison d'être,
Thanks to Chris and Heather for being tea and coffee monitors this week.
Well, the 'new' club has been running for six weeks, now (how time flies, eh), and already I have used my camera for at least five of them. And the upcoming Time Stamp exhibition is encouraging us to get out and aspire to capture images of Much Hadham and its environs that are just that bit different; just a little more creative. Certainly, it is helping me to improve my photography, both at the time of capture and the post-capture phase.
Our H2 Photographic Society (H2PS) Flickr group is really buzzing now (it's already had some images from this week's meeting uploaded). Our members are uploading their images daily and it is proving to be a hub where we can enjoy other members' images, 'fave' them and add positive and helpful comments. One of the images I have recently uploaded received a very useful comment which has helped me improve it. Members should be comfortable to give their honest and positive comments to other members' images because this will assist us all to become better photographers. I will admit there is an initial resistance to commenting on others members' images, but our opinions are important and useful to our club ethos of continuous improvement. The various discussions on our H2PS Flickr group are also becoming regularly used and read. It is always worth looking to see the latest comments.
Unfortunately, for those of you receiving this Newsletter who are not H2PS members, you cannot access the Flickr group...of course, you would be able to if you become a member.
If you have questions about our Flickr group, or need help or an invitation to the page, please contact Jeff (Sinclair) & Paul (Major) via this email address.

A Tale to Finish:
A bloke walks into Harlow Sports Direct on Tuesday and asked for some condoms and KY Jelly.
"We are a sports shop", says the assistant.
On Wednesday he comes in again and asks for some sex toys;
on Thursday some love eggs and a gimp mask (whatever they are!), and on Friday, something that we cannot mention because we haven't reached the 9 o'clock watershed...
On Saturday as he walks in, an assistant takes him to one side and says, "Look mate, you keep coming in here and it's getting embarrassing. You know we're a sports shop, what do you really want?"
The bloke summoned up all his courage, took a deep breath and said, "Can I have a Tottenham home shirt, please..."
(With apologies to Spurs fans everywhere)
