And welcome to this occasional members-only H2 Newsletter to update you on what's happening within H2.

In this edition there is revision for those members who are studying the Affinity Photo course with Malcolm and Paul - along with some "homework" - just like being back at school, innit :)

And there is also a link for members to see which of our images have been chosen for the competition against two other local clubs this Thursday.

Affinity Photo - Lesson 2

Once again, it was great to see so many of our members on this course. This week Malcolm summarised the basics from last week's lesson before moving onto how to use three of the many adjustment layers available in Affinity - see below screenshot.

He first showed how images can be improved using a brightness & contrast layer ( Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Brightness / Contrast... ).

He then moved on to showing how hue, saturation and luminosity can be adjusted ( Layer > New Adjustment Layer > HSL... ).

And the final example Malcolm illustrated, was making a colour image into mono ( Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Black & White... )

In order to help members improve as fast as possible, Malcolm & Paul encourage members to practice using these adjustment layers. To this end there is suggested "homework" below.

So the homework this week is designed to help members become skillful with the adjustment layers in Affinity Photo.

For each of the three adjustment layers illustrated by Malcolm, members are asked to choose one of their own images to use the adjustment layers on. And why not try some of the other adjustment layers, too. Exciting stuff!

The raison d'être of this course is to help members improve their photography and produce images they are proud of. Lesson 2 was moving away from the basics; any member who feels they have not grasped something, do ask Paul - either email or phone him on 07708 471331.
With the technology of Zoom, often a five-minute share-of-a-screen is all it takes to clarify matters.

Three-Way Competition

This Thursday we have a competition against two local clubs: Hoddesdon and Bishop's Stortford.

Each club have submitted 20 of their best images; the subject is Open and no more than two images are allowed from any one photographer. The 60 images will be judged by the independent judge, Frank Blyth.

H2 believes that entering external competitions is an essential part of staying keen; remaining competitive and motivated. It ensures that H2 remain outward facing and moving forward.
