The Wood Shed
by Jeff Sinclair
This Thursday - Dave Watts, Photographer & Diver

Last Thursday's practical (see next article) does prove that we are tentatively allowing ourselves a little more freedom from total lockdown. That was because we were able to be outside with plenty of space to socially distance. Unfortunately, we are still a long way from being able to meet at the Village Hall. So, this Thursday, we are back to a virtual meeting.

The advantage of virtual meetings is we see work from many more and diverse artists and our guest speaker definitely comes into that category. Dave Watts is a local photographer, based in Colchester. Take a look at his website; he obviously has a real passion for photographing the local landscape and oft wanders the Essex coastline for images. Unusually though, he combines his love of photography with his other interest, caving and more specifically, cave diving in the UK and beyond.

Dave's flair and expertise has gained him many placings and commendations, for example:
Mendip cave photography competition 2018 - 2nd Place; Essex Wildlife Trust 2018 Photography competition - 1st place and overall winner; Landscape photographer of the Year competition 2018 - Commended.

It will be an inspiring evening (whether you like caves or not...)

Last Thursday - an actual meeting

It was refreshing to get out and have a face-to-face meeting on Thursday last. And we couldn't have been luckier with the weather: warm and sunny with a cooling breeze. Perfect. After nearly five-months of isolation, seeing each other in the flesh was a real treat with much elbow-bumping and 'hug-throwing' going on.

It also confirmed what we as a club have often said: there are bounteous shots of quality to be had on our doorstep - literally. Jonathan's back garden is larger than average, with its barn, its wood shed and its copse and it allowed us the space to wander socially distanced. But it also allowed us to simply 'roam' creatively too. You can see a few examples of members' inventiveness that have already been uploaded onto our H2 Flickr page.

Talking of which, we are encouraging all members who were at the meet on Thursday, to upload their best images of the evening - up to a maximum of five - and Jonathan has kindly agreed to judge them on Thursday 20 August and pick which image he considers the strongest. Get uploading, H2'ers.

Much appreciation goes to Jonathan for the use of his garden and to Warren for all his organising: thanks guys

The Parish Magazine Needs You...

The Editor of Much Hadham Parish Magazine has requested from H2 members colour images to feature on the front page. She has asked for any shots that can be recognised as (or local to) Much Hadham, be they landscapes, streetscapes or buildings. Given that they are for the front page she asks for them to be 'portrait' format and she is quite happy to have a big sky or similar at the top to allow the magazine title to be placed in the top half.
This is a positive opportunity to motivate members to unfurl their shutter-finger, get out and picture our environment, with the added impetus to get our images in print. Please upload your images to our H2 Flickr page
