What is a Portrait

This week we have Tom Peck, who was last at the club to judge our black & white competition back in those heady pre-lockdown days, to deliver his talk entitled "What is a Portrait":

This presentation will look at the history of photographic portraiture from the Victorian beginnings through to our selfie culture of the 21st Century.

It traces how portraits have evolved from pictorialism through to post modernism, and will delve into social documentary, fashion, celebrity and even portrait ‘notoriety’.

It unravels the question of what is a portrait, and who creates it? The photographer? The sitter? The viewer? A 2 hour tour of portraits from the last 170 years - you’ll never look at a portrait in the same way again.

Should be a really interesting evening.
The zoom invite for the meetings is below, all are welcome to come along: Members & non-members alike.

Photographic History with David Davis

Last week we were treated to a talk by long time pro photographer David Davis.  He took us through a fascinating history of photography and equipment.  For some, it was a walk down memory lane and for other it was a chance to see how far the technology has progressed. With stories of bleeding knuckles from cold days in the darkroom to building up composite images in-camera it was fascinating.

And it is impressive that if you do a google search for CCD Chip Davids image (and fingers) come up at the top of the results after all this time:

Thank you David for an entertaining evening.

David let slip he could do us a talk about his time as an industrial photographer for Marconi and I am sure that will be really interesting too and we will try to arrange for that at some point.

Graveyard Bins

When you look at photography online, it's not that often you see something truly original.  That is not a bad thing as practice is a major part of learning your craft and we can learn a lot from copying others.  But sometimes an image stops you in your tracks with the sheer uniqueness and creativity involved. This is what happened to me when I first saw the cover of Al Brydons Graveyard Bins.

I was so impressed by the creativity involved in rendering something people actively avoid and ignore into a book of beautiful pictures, I had to buy a copy and I wasn't disappointed.  It really is a beautiful & inspiring little book.

Perhaps there is a lesson for us all there, looking at the world with fresh eyes can produce amazing results.

Chris

The Programme

We have been working hard to get a programme together for the next few months.  Salvaging what we could from the old programme and taking advantage of the fact that we are meeting over zoom to bring in some speakers we would not normally have been able to:
09 July 2020 Tom Peck (Portraits)
16 July 2020
23 July 2020 Paul Radden
30 July 2020 Justin Minns
