WELCOME TO THIS WEEK'S H2 NEWSLETTER
Hi Guys
October is proving to be a lively month for our club: textures with Jane Lazenby on the 1st; our annual mono competition attracting a record number of entries, keeping the independent judge on his toes and, last week we had Daniel Bridge showing us how to use our flash-guns creatively.
Well, the fun continues this Thursday. We have a practical evening, with Jo (Cleall) taking us through how she created one of her textured images. Then Chris (Shepherd) is going to have a 'play' with HDR and the Orton Effect, whilst Paul (Major) is going to take us through more of the increasingly popular photographic manipulation software, Affinity.
These evenings prove to be a chance for members to pitch-in with their comments and the different ways of achieving specific looks.
Should be an informative and fun evening.

Flash Talk
Last Thursday photography tutor Daniel Bridge gave us his illustrated talk, where he took us through the various functions of a flashgun, covering Basic Features, Zooming, Exposure Modes, Wireless Flash, Synchronisation (Sync) Speed and Hi-Speed Sync, and Trailing (Second) Curtain Synchronisation.
He's obviously an expert and it was an enjoyable evening with lots of information in a short period of time. For those that missed it or need to recap on it, it will be on our YouTube page as soon as Chris can get it edited & uploaded.

About The Image
Will London’s architectural heritage survive
by David Lukey
When I was visiting the Tate Modern, I went up to the observation level and was struck by the proliferation of skyscrapers in London, with St Paul's Cathedral almost crowded out by the modern, often unimaginative structures. I took one shot in which I isolated St Paul's and another shot of the skyscrapers. Both photos were taken with my iPhone 11 Pro. In post-processing I used the app Image Blender to superimpose the images, after adjusting the size to make them compatible.
The message I was trying to convey was that London's architectural heritage, as symbolised by St Paul's, is at risk of being overwhelmed by the apparently inconsiderate construction of high-rise buildings, many of which seem to have little architectural merit.
In contrast, high-rise buildings are not permitted in the old part of Paris, and the old city has been given a major clean-up, to show off the wonderful intricate architecture. High-rise buildings are only permitted in an area called La Defense, which is 2 miles west of the old city.
I am afraid it is already too late to turn things around in London, but one would hope that something can be done to arrest the wave of modern architecture.

Thank you, David. Having worked in London for 25 years I have watched from the sidelines as these skyscrapers were being built, not really forming a view about the rights and wrongs of the aesthetics. Your article has made me think more critically.

October Textures' Month - Proving Popular
After the recent excellent workshop by fine-art photographer, Jane Lazenby, we were motivated to run a competition encouraging all members to put on their creative hats, and produce an image (or images) that has textures involved in its production.
Well, members have taken us at our word - what a creative bunch we are. And this is only the first week. Do take a look at our H2 Flickr page and see what members are doing.
And keep the creativity going guys; upload your images to our H2 Flickr page. Also, it would be great if you added a description of how you composed your image, and make sure you have the word 'texture' in the title so we know it is a competition entry. We have until the end of the month.
For those members who need help with layers and masks (whether you are using Photoshop, Elements or Affinity) please email us - in this virtual world it is easy to share screens and give a helping-hand

The Programme for the Weeks Ahead
Here is our programme for the next few weeks. Your committee is retaining what we can from the old programme and taking advantage of the fact that we are meeting over Zoom to bring in some speakers we would not normally have been able to.
Unfortunately with the recent sharp increase in CV19 cases, our plans for in-person practicals have had to be popped back in the virtual box and will be regularly reviewed
