All Things Macro

Hello and welcome to this week's H2 Newsletter. Last night we had an engaging and motivating talk on macro photography by Peter Warne. The first half was let over to the theory of macro photography and the kit required. As is often the case with our hobby, the sky can be the limit for the cost of getting into this genre. However, Peter very helpfully explained how we can make a start with our existing equipment: buying close-up rings for a few pounds, for example, rather than buying a macro lens for a few hundred pounds.

After tea break (thank you to Jo & Mark for catering last night), Peter ran three practical desk-top set-ups for members to practice their macro photography, whilst he gave ono-to-one tuition to many members. It is an indication of how absorbing the evening was, that we over-ran; still in the hall talking and discussing long passed 10pm.
As was evident, Peter is an accomplished nature and wildlife photographer and runs macro workshops; see http://coppedhalltrust.org.uk for more information. Many thanks to him for a stimulating evening.

This Thursday 27 February

This coming Thursday we have our Portrait Competition. This is a projected digital image (PDI) competition, critiqued and marked by an external judge (this year it's Alison Jenkins). All members are encouraged to enter up to three PDI portraits. Full details for entry are below, but all you need to do is email your images to dpi@h2photo.org.uk with the subject: Portrait. Sunday (23rd February) at midnight is the deadline for entries to the portrait competition to allow the images to be loaded onto into the presentation software. We have had a number of practical evenings covering portraiture at the club this season so it should be an illuminating evening.

There is lots of activity on our H2 Flickr page. You will see from the panels further down that we are promoting (yes, there's a prize to be won - see Fabulous Flickr February, below) and developing it as a resource for all of our members. We see our H2 Flickr page as a place to "continue the conversation" allowing the sort of discussion and learning to carry on between the club meetings. Along with members' images, recent additions are discussions on:

  • Best of the Best - images to inspire us to keep pushing the boundaries - see below panel
  • Studio Portraits - a resource for those interested in this genre
  • Club Trips - information on interesting days out for members
  • Technical Questions - where members can ask questions and gain information
Take a look.

The Fabulous February Flickr Festival

February is the month to upload some of your images to our H2 Flickr page.  It's very easy - first, upload your images to your personal Flickr page, and then go onto the H2 Flickr page, to the "Group pool" of images and click on "Add photo", and follow the prompts.
Every image uploaded to our flickr group in February will be entered into our February Flickr competition.  The author of the winning image will receive a prize, so get uploading.

If you have any problems getting on to our H2 Flickr page try contacting our flickr admins. We're here to help.

An Invitation from Hertford Camera Club

Hertford Camera Club a lecture Friday February 28th by Luke Massey, an excellent young photographer who is rapidly making a name for himself in the professional world of TV and print. His photographs are amazing; it really shows how keen he has been to learn since a very young age, and how patient he is to catch the right moment. Examples of his work can be seen on this website. Even his home page is impressive.

In search of the world's rarest cat, the Iberian lynx. In 2001 there were less than 100 individuals left in the wild but thanks to intensive conservation measures being implemented. 2016 saw over 400 individuals living wild across southern Spain and Portugal, but they're not safe yet with a fragile rabbit population (their main food source) and a limited gene pool.

Luke is an ambassador for Sony, so there will be hints and tips on how to get the best out of their equipment; much will be transferable to what we all have in our various kitbags.
Please use this opportunity to try and come, and try to bring a friend; there will be no charge, and it should be really good. We would be very pleased to meet with members from other clubs.
Hertford Camera Club meet in St John's Hall, near the centre of Hertford, but accessed via a slip road off the London Road / A414 down from the A10.
