H2 Photographic Society
The H2 Newsletter

Welcome to news from H2PS. This week's club meeting was all about critique of prints: encouraging members to think more comprehensively about the images they take and see. Paul (Radden) did an impressive job in leading the evening with cogent comments and summarisations. Thanks to the members who brought in their prints; one of the many pleasures of photography is that it is a journey of continuing learning and experimenting. A photographic "bon voyage".

And furthering that journey, next Thursday we have our review of images on the subject of "In The Dark". Hopefully, everyone  will have something to enter after this month's practicals of light painting at the hall, and light trails at the church. But if not, there is still time to create something interesting - see Paul's (Major) star trails image and his comments later in this Newsletter. Please email up to 4 images in an email to dpi@h2photo.org.uk with the subject "InTheDark" and your pictures attached to it - by midnight on Sunday at the latest, please.

Programme Changes
Our club Christmas Dinner is being held at The Bull pub in Much Hadham on Thursday 5 December at 7.30pm. Please note there is no meeting at the hall on that night. If any member wishes to join the crowd at the pub and hasn't yet said so, please contact Paul (Major) on 07708 471331.

Flickr
It's really good to see so many members posting to our Flickr Group. It's a good chance to get feedback on your work and its where the images for the newsletter come from. Take a look.

Pure beginner's luck
Star-trails shot by Paul (Major). Paul states, "This shot is my first serious attempt at star-trails. It was taken this month, at 3.30am on a bitterly cold morning in the Lake District. I was with several H2PS members on a photographic holiday based in Keswick - my thanks goes to Graham (Chippett) for suggesting the idea. It is over Castlerigg Stone Circles, looking North with the mountains of Blencathra on the right and Skiddaw on the left. The light pollution between the mountains is from Carlisle. With the camera on a tripod, I pointed the lens at the North star and took about 30 separate images, each at 30 seconds at f/8 (camera set on manual mode). On the computer, the images were then put into StarStax (an open-source software downloaded from the internet - thanks to Jeff (Sinclair) for finding it) and this is the resultant image. Give it a try, guys. You just don't know what you will get".
